New product at the FachPack 2018 trade fair

SOMIC presents high-end machine for two-part case packages SOMIC is unveiling its next-generation Cover/Tray Packer at this year’s FachPack in Nuremberg. There is a good reason why the name SOMIC 424 DT sounds like a high-speed racing car because with a cartoning capacity of 30 two-part packages per minute, this machine is a record holder in the industry. That not only applies to the speed, but also the dimensions: with a footprint of just 3.3 × 2.1 metres, the machine is noticeably compact.

The combination of tray and inside cover is suitable for all pre-packed foods which require protective and attractive outer packaging. The case format range is 300 millimetres in length and 250 millimetres in width.

Maximum performance in the smallest of spaces

‘We wanted to offer maximum performance in the smallest of spaces,’ ex-plains Patrick Bonetsmüller, Managing Director of the Bavarian machine manufacturer. ‘It was also important to us that the machine could be integrated into an existing line without any issues.’ To demonstrate this production line expertise, SOMIC is building a production line with integrated 424 DT model in Hall 1 at FachPack. Technical experts are available to advise trade fair visitors.

Two touchscreen control panels per machine

In addition to its impressive high speed, the next-generation machine also boasts an abundance of technical innovations. For instance, the 424 DT is the first end-of-line packaging machine to feature two HMI control panels, meaning it can be operated from two different positions which means that operators do not need walk around the machine on numerous occasions which saves time. Thanks to intelligent software, undesirable overlapping during entry is not possible. The two touchscreen displays work with graphic symbols and are therefore very user-friendly even with limited language barriers.

Preventive maintenance assesses actual wear

The Cover/Tray Packer is equipped with the SOMIC predictive maintenance system, which identifies actual maintenance requirements in advance. The SOMIC Wiki dashboard allows you to monitor and analyse the status of the drives on all mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones, thus ensuring proactive, targeted machine maintenance and high efficiency.

Display of operating data via augmented reality

A world first at FachPack 2018: SOMIC’s augmented reality solution is an app which displays all important machine information on mobile devices. Component information is provided in an intuitive and easy-to-understand way with a virtual look inside the machine. The corresponding procedures are highlighted or complemented in to-do videos. Visual instructions there-fore make a format change, for example, very simple.

With these innovations, SOMIC GmbH demonstrates once again its innovative strength and is well prepared for the future. ‘With our new end-of-line packaging machines, we’re taking a major step towards Industry 4.0,’ says Patrick Bonetsmüller, describing his company’s strategic focus.
